@lachie, it funny you mention complaints about entries here's a list of dropped things from mine:

* Saving the hi-score table
* Picking up dropped drones
* Level selector
* Time bonus
* Random gift being dropped by another saucer
* In game instructions

Most were dropped due to time, although two weeks is plenty of time, i only did any work to it on the saturdays.

i'm fairly happy with it though. I haven't had a chance to look at all the entries yet but i thought that vdecampos was one of the best ones so far.

Anyway, it was a fun challenging competition and i now have a quite a few reusable modules i can use in other things!

@ciw1973, for the next competition, how about a limit on the binary size? I've always like the idea of squeezing as much as possible into a tiny file!

SECTOR SHOCK, v1.0.

First of all, thanks to ciw1973 for providing the monetary motivation to get this game done. I've mostly worked on this when I should be sleeping (like right now)... I stayed up twice to 4:30 AM on work nights (gotta get up at 7:00 AM) to polish it up and make sure everything's a go. For that reason, Mysoft, I'd be firmly against any sort of extension. I did what it took to get this done, and it wouldn't be fair to others like me to extend the competition because some people weren't as motivated. Besides... it looks like we already have a good amount of entries. : )

Image

So, what is SECTOR SHOCK? Well, it's a top down space shooter that takes advantage of the arrow keys for movement, WASD for firing, and shift/ctrl for special features. The game features 6 types of enemies and their generators (portals), 3 types of weapons, 2 special maneuvers, and 2 special bonus types spread across 25 waves of combat. Each wave gets progressively harder, while your ship gets more lethal. There are a few different level types, and even some health and support resources that must be managed during gameplay. There are some fun particle effects to provide atmosphere, courtesy of the excellent HGE library without which my entry would not be near as good. I assure you the game is very beatable, as I've played through every level myself. Estimated play time is somewhere around 45 minutes to an hour. I hope you have great success, and please post your scores on the forums!

Image

The game has a story/help screen (also included in the readme) and a high score table along with a .ini file you can use to modify the setup a little (or warp levels). Please post your high scores! I almost broke 50,000, but I had to quit early because I really need to go to bed! Explore, enjoy, have fun, and feel free to post or e-mail me any suggestions! Thanks a million.

Entry - http://www.bywombats.com/files/SectorShock-src.zip
With .exe - http://www.bywombats.com/files/SectorShock.zip

If you cannot play this in full screen 320 x 240, adjust the settings.ini so it will work on your system. Trust me, you won't regret it!

(This is my final entry barring any necessary bugfixes or gameplay tweaks. I'll update this post if it comes to that.)

@ciw1973 - Please do let me know if I left anything out of the zip that would disqualify my entry! For example... does it matter that the main zip is the binary (for the every day downloader) and the whole source is under ./src?

Here is my beta entry:

One thing may need explaining: The Up arrow key allows you to jump, but you can only activate it once every two seconds. So you should not hold this key down because it will not let you fly, as may be expected. ;-)

--

@aleofjax and Ryan: I cannot run your entry EXE files because the window size is too small to go full-screen for me (Windows Vista). I think you should not make the programs start in full-screen mode. ;-)

@KW - For mine, you can adjust settings.ini to start in windowed mode or even to play in 640 x 480 full screen (just uses the top left corner of the screen).

@duke4e

I can't download from the link you posted. It just sits there and never comes up.

I'm having the same problem with duke4e and aleofjax's entries, but then both are being hosted by MediaFire so it's not that surprising.

If anyone is having trouble with hosting, then please email your entries along with you forum name to chris[@]ciw42 dot net.

Gah! ciw, if they emailed you their entries already, could you please provide the downloads here?

Anyway, just played ChangeV’s entry. Hehe, wickedly fun. The story is somewhat distracting, and only the second stage is really challenging and fun. The other two are good fillers, but only that. Still, I like how you designed the final boss (how you used scaling). Overall, great work.

Orb seems too incomplete to me, though I played it till level 4 I think. I can’t get fully screen with it. Anyway, not my favorite.

Dang, I wish I had a better idea. This is a so tough competition.

Nothing's come through yet, but I'll be hosting and posting links to the versions of each game submitted by the end of the competition. That way we know everyone's using the same versions for audience appreciation marking.

I thought I could write a game from scratch in a day... I was wrong. :/

I'll finish and post my entry in a few day's time. Ah well... too late for this compo. Maybe I'll be ready for the next one.

How will we be voting for other entries? Just pick our favorite and name it, or give some points to each entry?

Here is my final entry. I've uploaded to few sites, so you can choose from where to download.

Here are some screenshots:

Game has 2 levels
Each level is random every time you play it
You can move the player with mouse or with keys
You can shoot with space or left mouse button
You can pause the game with pause or middle mouse button
You can exit to menu with escape
Each level ends with epic boss battle.
I've used most of the graphics, and most of the sounds. Game is using HGE for graphics, FMOD for sound, and my uTexture library for procedural graphics. uTexture is given as library, since one day I plan to make it commercial application.

Once you unzip the game, you need to run "run_before_playing_1st_time!!!.bat". This is needed only once.

edit:
Just reading the rules, it seems that I also need to provide sources only in separate zip, so here we go!
