I don't use IDEs for Python (I use only VIM), and I don't know of very many people who do, although I hear PyCharm is pretty sweet. Personally if it doesn't have VI keybindings, I don't use it. I guess one thing that is required in the text editor is that it maintain indent level when you press ENTER. All programming editors do that, though, and you'd want that in any language. And IDE is certainly not required, and I don't find it that helpful. Unlike C++, where a good IDE is extremely helpful if you're using any kind of library like STL or Qt.

I wonder how popular D is. If I look at the forum, it says:
There are 657,827 posts, 103,195 threads, and 3,655 registered users on this forum.
Freebasic forum says:
Total posts 232,224 • Total topics 23,515 • Total members 8,467
So not a huge difference I would say. A smaller, but more active community?

Maybe not the best measure for popularity, https://www.python-forum.io/ says:
Our members have made a total of 40,451 posts in 7,440 threads. We currently have 4,090 members registered.
Pretty sure, python is more popular than Freebasic and D.

German python forum ( https://www.python-forum.de/ )has a familiar look. Stats:
Beiträge insgesamt 317,203 • Themen insgesamt 39,484 • Mitglieder insgesamt 15,108
The python community is probably less centralized.

Comparison with German Freebasic forum ( https://forum.qbasic.at/ ):
Unsere Benutzer haben insgesamt 107,686 Beiträge geschrieben. Wir haben 2,235 registrierte Benutzer.
Which makes me wonder why the German programming community in general seems so large.

Simple, you've quoted the Austrian forum, not the german one: freebasic-portal.de.

Then: Germany, Austria and (partly, at least) Switzerland have: 'german speakers' ...
Also: I speak german (well, the swiss version), but I'm on this forum only ...

Conlusion: your reseach might not yield, a lot of useful information (less than expected).

https://www.freebasic-portal.de/ is not the forum. And I know German is spoken in more countries, but not spoken as much as e.g. Spanish: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_l ... e_speakers

Registered users on most forum are typically not comparable. Some forums delete zero post accounts after a while, some not.
