FBGD Rescue The Colors Competition (250$ 1st prize!)
FBGD RESCUE THE COLORS COMPETITION
It's that time in the year again people. Time for another FBGD competition! This year's theme is - RESCUE THE COLORS! Yay!
Now what do I mean by that?
The goal is to create a game that starts in a mock (pseudo) 1 bpp mode, with only black and white color used (no grey shades!). As the game progresses, new colors need to be unlocked/introduced, to a minimum of any 8 colors, up to 32-bit color mode. No restrictions there.
It can be any game from an RPG where you find/release colors hidden/captured by an evil wizard, an action game where new colors are introduced as you advance making the game more challenging in some way, or some puzzle game where new colors expand the gameplay mechanics. Any genre. Text games allowed! Just remember. Start black+white! This is where you enter with clever and original ideas. The only restrictions are, the game has to start in two-color black+white mode, new colors have to be unlocked/introduced gradually or at some point of the game, and new colors have to influence the gameplay and or look of the game.
The competition starts now and lasts till 31st of Jan 2012 (deadline for submission).
Rules and scoring details: http://games.freebasic.net/forum/index.php?topic=524.0
I was inspired for this theme during a conversation with someone regarding color restrictive game dev competition and later after finding this thread: http://opengameart.org/content/tileset-1bit-color
You can find a cool creative commons two-color tileset there, btw.
Questions and announcements of participation are more than welcomed.
P.S.
Donations in the way of increasing the prizes are more that welcome. Email me if interested.

If everything goes well with my current project, I'll participate.
It's been a long time since I've been in a game development competition.

Interesting idea
I still think a best app competition might provide more usable code for others. Games are cool and all that but it would be great to have a pallete picker app , or a game packer installer. Or a wav format converter app etc
Such tools will aid future development & be a big hit with the community im sure.

This definitely is an interesting theme you've chosen for this competition Lachie, if I can get my idea focused enough I may even make an entry. Been awhile since I actually made a game, let alone releasing one, but I've had several ideas mulling about for quite some time and I think I've got a good one that will go well for this theme.

It's been some 20 days since the start of the competition, so I would appreciate updates or first news on entries, if you haven't disclosed them yet, but feel comfortable doing so now.
For now confirmed entries in development (some I got via email):
ssjx's platform game (prototype released, FBGD forum)
Tusike's breakout game (test demo released, FBGD forum)
Ryan's puzzle game (started yet?)
Lithium's entry (played a prototype, not sure how much he wants to be revealed atm)
FXG861's ASCII entry
Landeel's something (?)

I've changed my mind and would not participate in this contest.
I started another project without competitors.
http://www.freebasic.net/forum/viewtopi ... 246#167246
FreeBASIC: static libs my new soundengine "FreeSound" a new network layer with TCP, UDP and the whole FTP protocol.
Basic4GL: main code with OpenGL syntax color highlighting
Excuse me but I have decided differently.
