I do what crysstaafur and dabooda (hrm...) do too on my FBGD forum, but even that can be tedious, as I get over 100 fake spam registrations per day. I have to take care of it every day and at least skim over the names. Hopefully I don't delete a legit registration here and there, which I get about 1 a month or less.

I'd still like to see the forum upgraded and I suspect there may be better spam-fielding capabilities in later versions.
But I think as it stands now we're on top of the spam situation. Usually when I log in and check for new posts the spam has already been moved to trash. Thanks mainly to Richard, I think.
But if it ever becomes too much for Richard (and all the other moderators), maybe we could look at adding one or two more at some point..

I've just had a bit of an experimental play in the spam settings. I've added a few more spam words to the list and set suspect posts to be flagged/hidden. Let's see if that results in fewer posts making it into the wild.
EDIT: could a non-moderator help me test this by trying to post about cheap rolexes or ugg boots or something?

At last count there were about 420 members with only one post and 3800 members with no posts at all. That makes maybe 3000 now unsuccessful attempted spam listings of links to commercial sites. It still takes spammers much longer to register and post than it takes admin to kill them.
The majority of spammers are really only trying to increase the “search engine ranking” of their linked commercial websites. FB members are clearly too sensible to click on a spammers link, knowing that it might reward a hated spammer with a few milli-cents or collect a nasty virus. It is a nuisance that spammers waste so much of our time, but they are wasting much more of their own time on the FB forum.
Most spammers simply register as members but with a commercial website link in their profile. Since the membership list is visible only to logged in members, the spammers don't realise that as they log out their website link becomes invisible to the two dozen or so “search engine statistics gathering bots” that are permanently trawling our little corner of the web. Commercial websites in the FB membership list are routinely flushed anyhow.
The forum registration process makes the FB forum available immediately to new members which is a very important, if not an essential feature, of a programming forum.
Spam is like graffiti or broken windows, like begets like. We really have no choice but to continue to efficiently clean the forum of all spam.

... this is nothing compared to what is happening on yahoo chat groups ..There are only bots asking "if you want xxx came visit this page" ...
the funniest thing is that the spam msgs are not actually real; they generated using "random sentence generator" [vocabulary and stuff] ... (of course not all ... only some of them)
You can see that from their text if you read it 'till the end and pay attention: it's gramatically correct but has NO real-life logic ...
[ex: like those advertisments for "boots" ,... ]
We need some kind of grammar & logic analyzer ... to do admin's job even better then admin ....
If we can do it computers can do it too .... thats why we are programmers ... to build this kind of stuff (// hard isn't it ... but it would be cool)
[I ment to find those kind of bots that post advertising, xxx and stuff like that [badly intentionated ... like those we'd seen a couple of days ago ...[aka last week, last month, last 2 month ago ... ][/quote]
PS: there's a law in my country for advertising over using emails stating that this kind of job it is not SPAM; advertising is one and posting non-sense advertising is a different stuff :
like:
"The new boots have demostrated european legitimate style for makeing brave fashin. They have been recognized in United Kigdom for fair usement. The chinesse boots are practically spread all over the world of the top quality inside of the new tunnel of love and crabby things are quite different for the last sense in the quarantinee of the gratest top less. The few are the spairless quality inside the top of the newly. Political leaders of UE have recogized the power of new boots. ....
...
...
"
And so on ....
So most of the stuff might be "gramatically" correct like predicates etc but it has no logical sense:
<<The chinesse boots are practically spread all over the world of the top quality inside of the new tunnel of love and crabby things are quite different for the last sense in the quarantinee of the gratest top less.>>
