Ahh, seeing as I and a few others never use -gen gcc it could be a "secondary download?" ie: "here's 24MB of gcc dependencies for those who want it. (although I don't know why you would, just code in C if you want C)."

GCC became part of the package the day (almost) as the -gen gcc branch was merged to official fbc. People want to test new features, that's why they download a daily build. -gen gcc is something exciting to test, for optimization purposes or just to pay with it. So it will probably stay in the package.
I don't think, that we will start a second package or separate fbc and gcc again. In these days some MB more or less shouldn't count anymore.

I use the asm backend generally so the gcc backend isn't too important to me.

Anyway, no worries I suppose (the minimalist in me rebels) a few more mb doesn't hurt.

It could still be worth separating from the point of view of people who regularly download the daily build and don't want the extra MB of unchanged files each time.
(That's my own inner minimalist speaking..)

One suggestion, use 7-zip to compress the archive. I tried. results 13 mo instead of 34 mo...

Yes, I agree. That would be a reasonable measure. But I can't promise a specific date for a "light" build to be available.

7-zip is already being used but with ZIP as output format. This is due to the better compatibility of ZIP.
