Problems with Windows 10

Postby Josep Roca » Apr 26, 2018 11:40

I have bought a new HP computer with Intel i5-7500 3,4 GHz and I'm having problems trying to use FreeBasic with it.

Just using

#include once "windows.bi"

generates the following output (using -v -showincludes to display the tree of included files):

Code: Select all

C:\Programación\FreeBasic32\inc\win\_mingw.bi(87) error 132: Too many errors, exiting

Looks like the #pragma once and #include once directives are being ignored and the compiler tries to parse _mingw.bi twice.

Perhaps Programación is a locked folder.
Program files on my win 10 computer is.

I have my freebasic in a folder called F B on the desktop.

No, it is not locked, and, in any case, it is not writing but reading the .bi files to parse them, but instead of skipping the second inclusion of _mingw.bi, it throws duplicate errors. And I haven't changed anything in the .bi files.

It reads them to parse them.
Of course, what else?

Note that all second reads are enclosed in brackets in my compilation.
But there are known problems installing freebasic in the program files folder Win 10.
Try unzipping a copy of freebasic into a folder of your own creation, and not on any system path.

Looks like FreeBasic only likes English. I have renamed the folder to "Programs" and seems to work fine. I will do more tests.

Definitely, it does not like Spanish accents. After renaming the folder to "Programs", it works fine. Maybe a warning should be added in the documentation.

Nope, its the other way around: it doesn't like (any) accents ;-)

It's a "well known issue", that it is a good "rule of thumb", to never use "accents"
(any language specific) / "spaces" and the like, in anything "path" related.

I don't think so, it is supposed to be "common knowledge", by now.

Maybe for old users or for linuxers, but not certainly for Windows users, where the use of accents and spaces is not usually a problem.

No, I am an "very old" user of: DOS/WINDOWS, but being ICT-pro taught me early on,
to never blindly *belive*, what M$'s Marketing is "saying" ...
I prefer to rely on experiences, made in all my time with M$'s products.

It is in no way specific to FBC, it applies to far more "older" SW-packages ...

Maybe for old users or for linuxers, but not certainly for Windows users, where the use of accents and spaces is not usually a problem.

It's a known problem of ported Unix toolchains (GCC/binutils/gdb and what uses it) to Windows.

These assume that the default 1-byte encoding can handle all characters, which it can with UTF-8 on *nix, and it can't on Windows where utf-8 is not the default 1-byte encoding, and the default unicode encoding for APIs is UTF16 anyway.

I assume you meant Program Files (x86)?

Anyway, what known problems?

As it happens I am running 1.06 (32 bit) from an internal HDD as opposed to my system drive on a SSD (beside the point)

Like compiling/running anything, from the Examples folder/dir.
(The user has no rights there, except: read/execute!)
FBC needs write/modify rights ... for the generated *.exe's!

Agreed, and as is should be, like ini files. However, the Examples folder can easily be moved.

Any other problems?

D'you mean, besides the fact, that the Windows-Installer package,
by default, installs there ? :-((
