Intel Atom no likes FBGFX?

Post by relsoft »

<relminator> hey I was asked by someone (Non-FBer)
<relminator> that my game runs at 8 FPS
<relminator> on his laptop
<relminator> it only uses FBGFX
<relminator> True enough, I ran it on my daughter's laptop it ran at like 18 fps
<relminator> it's a 1.6 ghz intel atom machine
<relminator> then I tested it on this comp (a Hitachi 600 mhz celeron with non-updated drivers)
<relminator> it ran at 60 FPS
<trout> atoms can be slow, but that doesn't seem right :O
<relminator> then for kicks I ran it on another comp this time a 233 mhz computer running win98 with just 32mb ram and a 2mb GPU
<relminator> it ran at 40 FPS
<trout> any chance you were running an 8-bit program on win 7 or something?
* relminator shakes head
<relminator> guy ran it on win xp
<relminator> the atom netbook has Xp sp3
<trout> was it an 8-bit program though?
<relminator> Hitachi 600 mhz celeron has 128 mb memory with winXP
<relminator> yeah 8 bit
<relminator> Guy's laptop ann the atom laptop both has 32 bit color desktop
<trout> i'd guess that's the problem, but i don't know why. generally the atom should be able to at least be a 1GHz P3/P4
<relminator> Hitachi celeron has 16bit desktop color
<relminator> 233 MHZ machine has 16 bit colors too
<trout> maybe the atom doesn't support something that makes the 8-bit programs fast? idk :S
<relminator> If I run full screen, on the atom, it runs at full 60FPS
<trout> oh.. that's pretty weird :P
<relminator> Probably, but the guy who asked me has a pentium
<relminator> laptop
<relminator> what are your specs?
<trout> my laptop is an amd turion, but i've run FB on some atom netbooks too :)
<relminator> http://rel.betterwebber.com/index.php?a ... m=Projects
<Lemieux> Title: Genso's Junkyard II'
<relminator> It's the FJ resurrection game
<relminator> I don't think it's the desktop bitdepth though as I've ran it at 60 FPS on my 1.6 ghz celeron laptop
<trout> but it's probably related to the atom architecture, not the atom's speed in general
<trout> anyway, it runs fine for me
<relminator> dang!
<trout> :P
<relminator> Time to post this
BTW, "trout" is Kris Windsor.

Any ideas why this happens?

Game is here:

BTW, If I run it fullscreen on the atom machine, it runs at full 60 FPS but jitters a lot.

I've found several articles regarding the Atom being a sub-par processor for clock rate vs performance. Sure, your Intel may have 2x the frequency of Amd, but when it takes you 5x the clocks to perform the same instruction it's rather much moot and the Atom exemplifies this. Atom was designed for web surfing at low TDP, not for gaming or any other intensive computing.

btw, your game kicks ass (as usual), too bad I use up all my credits just getting to level 2. XD

Atom as an in-order CPU sucks. But at 1.6GHz it should still smoke a 233MHz antique.

I tried it on an Intel Atom N450 Processor (1.66 GHz) using wine in Ubuntu Netbook Release (UNR), selecting all the defaults, and the game play was fine for such a small computer.

I did not see where you checked the FPS?

Press F1 while in game to see some debug stuff.

Apparently, when I switch to fullscreen, it runs on 60 FPS in this atom netbook (an acer aspire one). However it jitters a lot.

angros47: Yeah, the BGMs are all salamander. It's my fav game on the NES platform.

The options? Depends really on the formation. Sometimes it's just a simple sin/cos and sometimes a linear reverse array copy.

Hmn... This would be a nice tutorial for back2basic issue 3.

Actually, the only working stage so far is stage 1. I'm too lazy to finish the game as I got interested in DS coding.

Actually.. that's cool.. but.. I did get to stage 3!

O.o

Stage 2 was there, and complete, just hard as heck..

Stage 3 was INSANE! O.O I had to use my bombs over and over to stay invinsible, cause I couldn't keep up with the speed of the walls moving.

(I took a screenshot of the 3rd level.. just in case..)

I mean, how did you summon up the little whirley side-kick space thingies?

Which key calls them up..

The Gfx cards on the first gen Atom boards realy sucks.
