no Windows system sounds after update

Post by srvaldez »

after updating I had no system sounds, even though the media player worked ok, after much trial and error, I found the fix.
in the windows search box I entered sound and chose "Change system sounds"
the sound scheme box had "No sounds", selecting Windows Default solved the problem
hope this helps someone

Sounds familiar (http://masm32.com/board/index.php?topic ... 8#msg86518):
Open device manager and get the properties of your sound device.
If the Roll Back Driver button is enabled, try rolling back.
If it isn't, uninstall the device (NOT the driver software as well) and reboot.
If that doesn't fix it uninstall both the device and driver.

There was a problem with certain laptops (HP?) that lost sound after a Windows update just recently.

I tried those instructions in vain, the problem was not a driver but lost settings.

I have two virtual machine software products on my Mac, Parallels Desktop and VMware fusion, I have VM's for both
now the Windows 10 VM's are all loosing the system sound settings, I noticed that some settings are stored on the cloud, for example the desktop background and I am concerned that some virus may be propagated via the cloud.
it seems that some Windows Defender files are being corrupted and possibly other files as well
other than cutting internet access to the VM's, do you have any suggestions?
how do I cut off all cloud activity?

it seem that uninstalling or at least disabling OneDrive is the way to go.
I think it's sync settings https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... c-settings
