Might be enabling once things settle down ? , 64 bit and IPv6 are two big step changes that might not get changed for a long while

if the hardware starts to stand still then the software has a chance to catch up & undergo fine tuning

Not very much I would think. It would only affect the low level network libraries that people have written, and even then only if they are IPv4 only. Also, no more IP broadcast on LAN networks in IPv6, but I think multicasting is intended to replace that somehow. Although I haven't used multicasting yet so I don't know.

DON'T PANIC!

Having read in a bit more depth, it seems that this is more like a publicity launch. There's too much of a customer base out there with IPv4 routers which don't have upgrade firmware. Until there's an incentive for ISPs to provide free upgrades, nothing's going to happen.

Eventually everything will be IPv6, but as your said, not for a long time. Still, it's good that support for IPv6 is finally growing. It's been around for roughly 14 years already :-)

Like IPv4, IPv6 is an internet-layer protocol for packet-switched internetworking and provides end-to-end datagram transmission across multiple IP networks. It is described in Internet standard document RFC 2460, published in December 1998.

I routinely use local IPv4 numbers to access computers on my home LAN but I have yet to type an IPv6 number into my browser. They are too looong!

I got two results. When I first accessed the page I got the same result as you. I'm using Win7 which has support for IPv6, although my router is IPv4 only. Also I have no idea whether or not my service provider supports IPv6.

However when refreshed the page I got a better result. The main difference was that now I had an IPv6 address, and it also said, "Your IPv6 connection appears to be using Teredo, a type of IPv4/IPv6 gateway; currently it connects only to direct IP's. Your browser will not be able to go to IPv6 sites by name. This means the current configuration is not useful for browsing IPv6 web sites."

This is a 'tense' open floor debate, 'sucks caterpillar snot' is a new phrase to my ear. lol The guy who okayed the doomed & flawed IPv4 is the chair. All they key concerns are put to the panel...an interesting watch indeed.

Switching from IPv4 to IPv6 will make all 99.9% of all current network devices obsolete. The entire h/w & sw that powers the global internet is heading for the trashdump.On the upside 128 bit IPv6 addressing is good enough for the Entire Milky Way galaxy...and possibly the universe...(maybe) so-once its done its done. But we will have to live with it ...for ever ?
