Yes, though I would prefer double-quotes...

When I do freebasic programs a generally use an
Intel P3 Katmai 450Mhz, 160MB Ram, 4MB AGP2x card ...

For inet and stuff I use an
Intel P4 CeleronD 2.54Ghz, 1Gb RAM, iNVIDIA GeForce 5200- 256MB video ram

But my first "love" was an original Intel 8086 with 640KB ... long time ago... :=)
Then a CyrixMX2-233Mhz using 16Mb RAM with 2upto8 Mb shared with the video card :))

Today I develop an os(&stuff)for a mp4 player which has a Z80 (72Mhz) and a DSP (72Mhz) with 120KB Ram .... It's fun ! :)
--------------------------------
I also got a netbook :
Intel Atom N450 (1.66Ghz, 512kb cache, hyper threading - 2 threads),
memory 1Gb,
hd 160gb(150GB),
intel graphix media accelerator for mobile - intel GMA 3150(os can allocate up to 250MB of video, depending on application)
window7 starter (very good; the only thing is missing is win Aero and also it does not allow me to chage background ... but who cares about bkground ...)
it consumes 7-8Watts when programming
and 10-12.5 Watts when playing games or other intensive resources
(compared to a desktop 125Watts .... pretty good)

I have a laptop SAMSUNG R525.
It has a dual-core 2.10 GHz AMD processor and ATI Mob Radeon HD5400.
With this laptop I'm working, studying at university and do my hobbies uncluding programming in FB
All my life is in this computer :)

i would love to see what mips / times you get with my benchmark prog

try speed test 8 and mcorespawn ( see tips n tricks section ) they are on page 2 of my post

KaraK, i was thinking of treating myself to a new system with a spec just like yours, id love to know in advance the speed gain i would be getting with an AMD Phenom II X4 955 system
you might be the first to crack the 1000 mips barrier, i got my fingers crossed

agamemnus Im doing a feasibility study ref making my AI project portable , something like 2x Asus G73SW and 10 atom net books could do the trick (ill need to get a grant or sponsorship for this though) your test results would realy help me nail the numbers down

http://asimov1.wikispaces.com/Dalek

agamemnus (ive got an atom my self) i just need the numbers for a high end laptop. yours has been burned in and subjected to real word usage/background loads ill be able to factor in aging , variability during bursts of activity etc & compensate for this in advance codewise

i would be very grateful if you both did these tests
Sorry I wasn't around for the past two weeks, I will run these tests when i get home in few hours.

edit:
test results on my secondary system
AMD Phenom II X4 940 (4 cores @ 3.0GHz)
RAM: 2 GB
Graphics: MSI nVidia GeForce 8600 GT
Running Windows XP 32bits with some Virtual Machines

speed test 8 results (set the process to real time priority in the task manager):
Free memory: 1235 megabytes

starting Free Basic speed test......approx 10 seconds

start 184012.6958633011 184012.6959177773
finish 184019.2043720641 184019.2044178799

time = 6.508508762985002 i = 2500000001 how many loops done in total

thanx for posting your results

Post by TESLACOIL »

thanx for posting your results 1850 mips is the best result seen so far

note
mips in this case = millions of free basic for next loops
a real word number reflecting how many simple instructions your FB code can do per second

im looking at getting a new pc and wanted an idea of how it will perform doing simple serial computation. i should be able to run 4 x simple FB progs on the one new quad core machine and get at least the same speed as i do on 4 fast individual P4s type machines.

1800+ is 10x faster than the 180mips my single core P4 celeron 2600core can do

closing all services and running the celeron 2600 at realtime using speedtest 8 . cold computer etc etc the max i ever got was 204 mips

core v core your pc is still twice as fast as my creaking celeron , the better cache , faster loading memory , architecture etc all boosting the speed a bit above and beyond the GHz speed difference

i have also havea newer socket 750 2ghz celeron that hits around 235mips in speed test 8

and an ancient 2.6ghz athlon that hits around 315mips in speed test 8
& 365mips in the muticore test even though its just a single core

365 x 4 = 1460 & still falls noticeably short of the 1850mips you get on your quadcore machine. So i can think 4x speed with a bit left in reserve

value for money
, an ancient second hand Pentium still gives you noticeably more mips per $ than a brand new modern mid-range machine.....that's the down side of moores law flattening off for serial computation

but unless you enjoy playing crysis at 1 frame a second , spending a few extra bucks on compressing computer power into one machine is still worth while

summary

it looks as though modern pc architecture provides up to 50% speed boost above and beyond the ghz speed of its cores

ghz x cores x modern architecture boost of up to 50%

eg new machine 3ghz x 4 cores x 1.5 = 18 ..add two zeros to get your mips

older architecture =

ghz x cores x (+/- 25% ) depending on the age of the architecture

eg old celeron 2.6 x 1 x 75% = 19.5 (real-time) ..add two zeros to get your mips

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
AMD Phenom II X4 940 = benchmark @ 3681
is 10 times faster than my celeron2600= benchmark @ 365
in this simple real world for next loop test when all the cores are fully loaded...but only 2 1/2 times as fast core for core

My network why the obsession with numbers and tests ?
i think ill keep the 4 best Pentium clunkers and buy 2 new quad core machines thus giving my network the serial computational power of 12 hot Pentium 4s while leaving some essential headroom for parallel computation.

The network will have a real world effective computation of about 50Ghz of old fashioned computing power. (although the raw numbers only add to 36ghz) The true parallelism aspect gives it a big kick. 50ghz being the minimum real word computational power i require for my project....which is a bit of a stretch to achieve if you have mislaid that winning lottery ticket lol

Just been doing some research

The new Intel i5 2500K kicks a lot of butt for the $$$ (3.3ghz socket 1155)

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

It scores a whopping 7253 on their benchmark & its rubbing shoulders with chips that would normally cost you jail time.

Quiet PC
My mainstay , P4 Celeron2600 is running near silent now i dropped the CPU voltage a touch & snipped the fan wires and inserted a resistor inline to lower the fans speeds. pc runs a tad slower, but so worth it for the silence.

They have just started flogging Atom bundles at PC world. For 60 quid you get an Atom D410 chip + mb + 2gig ram + 120gig HD. Handy if you want a quiet second pc for your living room.

I have a 11.6 pol Sony Vaio note(net?)book with AMD Fusion Zacate E-350.
Fair price, very silent, video performance is excellent, works very well with Linux, and I can plug it in my monitor using HDMI.

All he said to me was: "Working for the government doing R&D"

So, if he tells you, your government would have to kill you. ;*)
