Re: Compiled reality
Compilers are best at optimizing individual functions, and sometimes good at optimizing their immediate context. Compiler authors aim to make optimizations that are as close as possible to theoretically, deterministically proven not to cause harm. They don't always succeed. Sometimes, compilers will...

Re: Compiled reality
Yes, warnings... compiler flags can actually alter behavior of code. Very frustrating for professional developers. I know very good programmers who write very large programs and run into this sort of issue in production environments. I am of the belief that a compiler should never alter the results ...

Re: What is machine learning?
Our team just won a local civic hackathon for the government using machine learning. Microsoft has some good chatbot technologies that have pre-loaded with algorithms and data sets and can train against your conversational workflows. It's pretty cool stuff. As far as I'm aware, it's really fancy sta...

Re: FreeBasic Discord Server (Alternative to IRC)
Everything has a Discord these days. It's about as close to objectively better as you can get for more purposes. I agree with this move :)

Re: How is everyone
If I was to contribute to FB at this point, it would probably be to make some cross-platform tool and to add some much-needed utilities useful for real-world applications & game development. Although, what's the difference these days between doing that and just writing a game in Unity or a web o...

Re: Essentially, Leaving the Community.
I'm reaching the point (I'm still in my 20's) where my pursuit of happiness (ie. programming) is making me unhappy, because I worry about how I might better spend my time/use my skills while I'm doing this. Of course, you are right that only I can make that determination, and I just did. I just ans...

thesanman112: Programming for fun / as an art is something I wish I still could do. I think it's a combined experience of the creation and the process of creating. Just how painting isn't about the picture, but knowing how to use the paint, the paper, the brush and whatever other tools you have or u...

Re: Apple emoji typeface: legal concern
EDIT: Nevermind me. I thought you were talking about the forum. Yes, you would need to know the terms and conditions of using Apple's emojis (or the typeface containing them) for your own product - whether or not you can use them at all. If you contact Apple's legal department, they are likely going...

Re: Essentially, Leaving the Community.
I did find this cool website, though, which does a good job summarizing why I loved the internet and technology so much as a kid: http://www.cameronsworld.net/ Tbh I don't care that much about tech itself. I care more about people and doing interesting things. But if I could make something like Came...
