globals are bad

Sorry this sound personal but Man oh man, Dijkstra is only emphasizing his inability to be a good tutor. Methinks he is like the two authors we have here. The one wrote the Maths prescribed book for grade 12, the other a professor who wrote the prescribed book for statistical analysis for 1st year P...

Globals are bad

@All I forgot to mention in my post to Eponasoft where I said "Vince gave me ..." He most effectively short circuited Item 5 of my original post. I will try to follow his advice re passing of parameters as far as possible as this was also substantiated by Marcov who's comment re Stack, Cache, in my ...

Globls are bad (?)

@Eponasoft I am not picking a fight. If you have perhaps read my clarification regarding linking of two files item 6 in the last post on Page 1 (QB4.5) could you please give me a reply that is more relevant the to the subject. Looking at some of your posts I see you have a wealth of experience. Reme...

Globals are bad

@ Marcov Actually since 1998 I have only once encountered the memory problem when I tried to sort a large membership list for a Trampoline and Tumbling Club. At one stage their Monkeynastics (pre school to grade 2 Gymnastics modified for toddlers) membership exceeded 2000. I bypassed the memory prob...

No new line

My previous post was more a leg pull.
Being new to FB when this warning came up I thought what the heck is going on I did type END so why a blank line after it. I then assumed that FB had replaced END with a new blank line. Rather naive of me.

Globals are bad (?)

Thanks Zippy. I have edited my post, the last one on page 1 i.e the one where I told Vince good example but how about my FBC story? by adding comment regarding item 6 of my original post. That is why I'm still here.

global variables are bad (?)

I must be winning this one no-one seems to have shot me down.(Unless I'm the moron referred to - I faff at times but I think that so far each post says GLOBALS are necessary. Somewhere someone said for, FBC to work correctly Globals are still used. (*) Okay if it is item 6 of my post causing problem...

Global Variables are bad

QB viewpoint. When I first started BASIC I was declaring everything COMMON, SHARED: DEFINT A-Z. Progressing I thought storing unnecessary variables under GLOBAL was possibly slowing down execution of my program and was it really necessary? I am self taught so I was trying to use logic, and my conclu...

No newline

In QB we had to say END. Now I save typing two letters by just pressing ENTER after my last line of code. Hmm it's actually three because I had to press Enter B4 typing END

QB on WIN 7

@Kiyote BasicScience previously said DOSBox works but execution is slow. I think he was answering the original query by BasicScience. The request by BasicScience could now be translated to:- 1. How can he compile programs that probably say "Out of memory" i.e 640KB DOS barrier when running DOSBox in...

QB + 16Bit on WIN7 and VISTA

In the DOSBox 0.74 folder you will find "DOSBox 0.74 Options.bat" This opens the Config file in Notepad. IMHO this batch file eliminates the need to use the command line and it is the easiest way to go to change the Options in the Config file. This of course is only applicable if you don't use Kiyot...

QB on WIN7

I have taken a look at the same post on QB cafe. Wow this looks like a big problem. The first post was 08:00 2010-01-07. Yesterday there were 4975 views of the post and today at 18:15GMT there were 5066. The only recourse looks like a VM. But as WIN98, WIN 2000 and earlier MS OS's have been abandone...

CHAIN Command

In another post re IF Key$<>"" Zippy wrote:- "If all you want to do is PAUSE a loop while waiting for a keystroke and then discard that keystroke, then it is more efficient to use sleep" I tried replacing the DO key=inkey LOOP with SLEEP in your snippet and snoring on the task bar was again the orde...

Two *.Bas compiled to one

SOLVED it. I loaded both programs in FBIde. Selected all in the second file, used copy clicked the first file and used PASTE. FBIde is more versatile than I thought. To the Author congrats and thank you for a good program.(*) @Richard Thank you. (Edit added after your post) I was busy compiling my s...
