I find that programs that have comments for each line rather distracting and hard to follow, I prefer comments at the beginning of a block or function and occasionally for a line that does something obscure.

yes, but the GNU compilers support the extended format and I was refering to the GNU lib, but I should have been more specific.

I have stayed away from the library because of the license, LGPL, which you cannot
statically link in a project without making it LGPL also, unless you compile the library as a DLL and use that.
Please read the license carefully.
