Micro$oft was going to open source Visual Basic 6 but...

as you can see in the Slashdot post it has been denied. :-)

It would be nice I suppose, not that I use VB or Windows for that matter, but many smarter people here would find a use for it.
On the other hand, I'm happy with my beloved Linux and Freebasic. (and Gambas and Lazarus.)

@Lachie;
Please forgive my ignorance but how can I add myself to your map? I can see your location and photo, I logged in with my Gmail account, but I cannot add myself.

Very nice idea btw, thanks.

Maybe not on-topic but I use Google Translate on freebasic-portal.de to translate German to English. I find it very useful and being in the same family of languages, German can be translated into English very successfully. Of course I'm not a native speaker for neither German nor English, but I can ...

I'm 39 and work as an IT consultant (A glorified title, I just fix computers) in a factory and run a mom&pop computer store. I've been programming in BASIC for more than 25 years (began with a Spectrum 48K), mostly little things. I'm not a project man, I just fix little things. I recently began ...

I mostly use Linux, so I use Scite and Geany. They both support Freebasic (for Scite you should tinker with global options but it is easy) Geany is more like an IDE, on the other hand Scite is more like a programmers editor. Geany has more features, but because my programs generally tend to be littl...

No, it is not overclocked. It's 2.9 Ghz. Notice that I used 4 different shells to spawn your benchmark. There might have been some kind of a lag like ~1 secs between each shell. But I tried it 5-6 times and the results were consistent.

Hi Teslacoil, I tried your benchmark on my home PC (Athlon II X4 635) on ArchLinux 64, using 4 seperate shells. The result was 460 x 4 = 1840 MIPS approximately. I do not have Windows right now on my PC, I plan to play some games on this weekend, so I'll setup Win7 tomorrow or on Sunday. I'll try yo...

I did not use any Sempron for more than 4 years. Little difference in price and I do not like the smaller cache. Also, it is not a very good idea to overclock if you plan to use it for ten years in my opinion.

I'll check some quality (95-140 Watt TDP) boards today. I'll let you know.

Hi Teslacoil, I am no expert, but I make a living building and maintaning these kind of PCs, so here are my thoughts. I would buy AMD Athlon II X2 s for cheap CPUs. In Turkey, where I live, I can buy them for 65-75 USDs each.(Without VAT of course.) For motherboards, for the sake of longterm upgrade...

Really people, let's cool down. If the tone does not soften, people will begin to label each other as [a believer of some system or not] and will see them as not individuals but a part of some sect. We all love to program, so we are more rational than the average. Let's behave rationally and do not ...
