Oh sheesh if you're in linux, you have dozens upon dozens of clients you can use, and they're all free. You could even use something as simple as xchat or even $#@$&. I use kvirc myself, but many people don't like it because it's QT-based and quite heavy and "pretty". EDIT: Huh, the stupid filters c...

When you #include source files, they get compiled along with the file you're #including them from. So in essence, no advantage is gained. Of course, aside from FB itself, I don't think many people here have written any source code that really needs to be split into modules for the benefit of reduced...

Maybe that's the main problem of OOP...people become too reliant upon it. There are times where it is beneficial and times when it is baneful, with the latter seemingly being more often. There is no perfect paradigm. A smart coder knows many different methods and uses the one most beneficial to the ...

It would be very difficult to NOT learn OOP when learning C++ as it's a key feature of the language. But there is nothing you can do with C++/OOP that you can't do in a regular procedural language...you just get to do some of it a little easier.

I've been Microsoft-free for a few months now and am still wondering how I used their products all those years. Ever since abandoning Windows, I've found that I have had to force myself to code better and to learn systems that I previously found inaccessible because they were "too hard". There are a...

You may say what you wish but i have different expirience with linux. On same computer i install Mint xfc(lite win manager) and give him 10 Gb partition and still work slower then XP. What you say about that? I wouldn't know; I don't use Linux, only BSD. But it sounds like the system isn't done cor...

A real operating system doesn't require the latest supercomputer to run efficiently. Every successive version of Windows has required a faster and faster computer with more and more memory and storage. But at least they've looked prettier! So to that end, they become more like desktop toys rather th...

Why pay half of the price of Windows for something like that though? Might as well just go all-out and buy Windows. Wine is free, and it works. :)

Re: Thoughs on programming - Big waste of time or not

On the last point... 7. Computers suck -- my computers always die in 6 month intervals.... I understand your frustrations to some extent. However, the one big thing that really is annoying for me is how slow it is to do any real work even with a modern PC, thanks to bloated windows and poor systems...

That everybody and his brother wants to release wild-ass Linux distributions doesn't help. That's why there have been so many distros. Once one person jumps on the gravy train, everyone thinks "LIKE LOL I KAN MAEK LUNIX DISTRO LOL" and out pops another one. Some are very useful (no one will dispute...

I think the reason many people care about the Linux != Unix issue is that many useful applications that come from real Unix that could be useful in Linux do not build, or require some modification to build. Many basic utilities that were mainstay in Unix had to be modified or rewritten completely fo...

Actually, John Spikowski , if you read the thread a little more carefully, you'll notice that it was Zippy who started the comparison, and I just noticed that cha0s accused me of trolling, which was very interesting because he should know me better than that . So is there any "functional" difference...
