Re: Chess game

Ok I've had a look to try and resolve the problems with illegal moves and losses on time. Firstly, a test run of 60/1 in Arena gave results of 28:22 to Numpty over Nomega 140310 - in the 50 games there were 19 losses on time and 3 losses by rules infraction (ie illegal moves). After digging about, a...

Re: Chess game

Doing it this way is the easiest fix, it will not affect the rest of the array. Since B(-1) was not intialize at startup it could have any value including 0, the program did not write to that location so nothing happens but it not the right way. I could have changed -1 into a other value but that w...

Re: Eschecs

Sometimes it is unable to checkmate the lone white king when it has a queen and rook Yes, that problem is well known by chess programmers, and isn't so easy to solve. I have heard of endgame tablebases, but I haven't found time to study it. Actually, it shouldn't be too difficult and doesn't need t...

Re: Eschecs

Overall im very impressed. Its much harder than most people realize to build a chess engine that doesn't get wiped off the board by a club level player. So very true, the hardest thing is to build a stable engine that doesn't crash or play illegal moves and knows all the rules properly. Given today...

Re: Chess game

I altered something but remove/added to much, my apologize for that. No worries frisian, I appreciate all the hard work you have put in especially given your greater programming skills and the opportunity to update the program into more recent FB has re-ignited my interest in looking at the code. S...

Re: Chess game

Re my earlier post - I've found the problem with the error in illegal move generation - it's not the move gen function but a problem related to using setboard again. The clear board subroutine is not initialising accurately meaning that the off-board guardian values (-99) are not being set for inval...

Re: Chess game

I had a look at a few issues and I must admit that for most off it I am to blame, when i tried to get it to compile with the newer versions of FB I neglected the winboard part because it did not work. I will try this weekend to get things running correctly. I have partial fixed the crash when compi...

Re: Chess game

Excellent news to get winboard working - great work and many thanks frisian! (I had sussed out about close handle but was struggling beyond that). I haven't looked at code yet but managed to run a small number of games - there are some problems or errors I've noticed from using to date: - both winbo...

Re: Chess game

I have tried to get winboard protocol working but I did not get it working but perhaps there is someone that can get to work. Having it working would make testing must easier. Agreed - I hope there is someone who could help us get this part of the code working - especially given the speed improveme...

Re: Chess game

Many thanks for sharing your work frisian - haven't had a chance to look at in detail yet but can see you have put in a lot of work on the code. It has been quite a while since I looked at the source in detail - more recent work has been tinkering with a few parameters - but I will refresh myself an...

Re: Eschecs

There still are things to do (piece animation, UCI protocol, amongst other things). In anticipation of UCI implementation thought it might be fun to quickly play a game between Eschecs and my program. Haven't looked at the code in detail but from a cursory look Eschecs searches to max depth of 5 so...

Re: Chess game

Many thanks for your sample code and advice - much appreciated - all I can say is you can see why it has taken me 9 years to get this far! :) I've had a quick go with some of your suggestions (including dropping in your revised incheck routine - hope this is ok?). Not gone through all code but to da...

Re: Eschecs

Hi Roland I downloaded your program and only had a brief play so far but wanted to say thanks and well done, it is most impressive especially with gui also - I can imagine how much effort has been involved. The screenshot reminded me of playing Fritz 2 and I realised why on reading the read me! Inte...
