Re: [offtopic]What was at Jul 24, 2019 something special ?

Has anybody narrowed it down to what particular thread the Chinese guests are looking at, or is it just this site in general.

Re: FreeBasic communication with Arduino logic error?

WOW! This turning out to be one great tutorial on serial programming. I have been using PySerial for all of my serial comm programs, but I think that I will start at the beginning of this thread, and start giving the code examples a better look. Now , if you were to squeeze in some examples of how t...

Re: FreeDOS 21st century?

I am still following the progress of the Knight kernel. It seems like there still seems to be some progress going on with the project. On my Linux box, I set up a "play along" section where I have the Knight kernel source and the NASM compiler, and I do an occasional compile to see how it ...

Re: FreeDOS 21st century?

Not sure if anybody is following the Night Kernel development, but, the latest information, is they have implemented some working multitasking code. I did not notice what the status of the 32 bit environment is. I am glad to see that they do have some code development going on at a somewhat consiste...

Re: UEFI FreeBasic programming

In that way, it would be possible to run a Freebasic software with no operating system at all, since the application itself would be a very specialized operating system (it's called unikernel) Hmm, very interesting, you could boot up a computer, and get into a FreeBasic environment? I guess FreeBas...

FreeDOS flashdrive experiment

Back, in the beginning of time, you basically had a PC unit which consisted of a CRT, the PC, and keyboard. The PC had one floppy drive, in most cases. After you installed MS-DOS, you could put in a blank floppy, do 'format A: /S', and you would have a bootable floppy disk. Now, you could take that ...

Re: UEFI FreeBasic programming

As I dig into the UEFI stuff, it is looking like only a binary type file will be dealt with. So, I guess that excludes FBC, since it only produces .exe type files. I do not think that there is an exe2bin program to do such conversions, specifically conversion of FBC produced .exe file.

Re: UEFI FreeBasic programming

Probably running FreeBasic in the UEFI, is beyond the scope of this thread. I was thinking more in the line of, creating a program that was compiled by FBC. My initial thoughts were, if FBC creates only .exe files, can those be run by the UEFI. EFI has been around for awhile now, I think Intel is ma...

UEFI FreeBasic programming

Some of the reading that I have been doing about UEFI, I get the impression that you can write your own program, and it does not have to be an OS, and have it run. Not sure if my interpretation is what it really can do. I thought we could have a discussion about actual programs, specifically FreeBas...

Re: FreeDOS 21st century?

FreeDOS/xxxDOS, 21st century, to little too late. After viewing some of the threads and posts here, it is a lost cause, for FreeDOS/xxxDOS. Even if the Knight kernel becomes available, in the near future, it will not help to overcome the UEFI wave. The companies that are selling the PC desktops will...

Re: Why do you still program for DOS?

I don't. My curiosity about DOS was because of FreeBasic. I have used Freebasic in Windows 10 and Linux, so far a Linux version combined with my favorite IDE, Geany, has been the best experience. So, I decided to see for myself how a DOS experience, running FreeBasic, would be. First hurdle was reme...

Re: MS-DOS 4.0 (multitasking)

Just to clarify, I think of multiuser, in the "classic" sense where you have a port available for somebody to login and run a session. This means that you could have more than one person that is using the system, at the same time. Just think of the original Unix system. Now, the way I reca...

Re: MS-DOS 4.0 (multitasking)

Well, it looks like FreeDOS is the only one left that has some support, and sources that are available. I checked out DR-DOS, and that WEB site is no longer available, I guess they are no longer doing any business, with DOS. In fact, EDR-DOS OpenDR-DOS is no longer active. Pat Villani, the author of...

MS-DOS 4.0 (multitasking)

I was doing some searching on the internet and came across some items that mentions that there was/is a European MS-DOS 4.0. Since this forum has a lot of European members, has anybody really used this version of DOS? I also noticed that the software is available, but I do not have any 720 or 360 fl...

Re: View command in DOS

Thanks for the suggestions fxm, I guess it was the fault of my coding. The next thing that I would like to try is to have a program start up when I click a button on the main window. Maybe add a line of code within the view code that would start up an external program, then when the external program...
