Huh, that is queer, yes you were correct, for some reason it allowed me to proceed but the file was much bigger without it. I wonder why. Anyway, thanks everyone.

Random access files are larger than they should be

I've been trying to make a simple programme and i realise that it hasnt been working because it doesnt follow: len = lof (fileNo)/len(record) as i thought it used to, i.e i would have thought the file would be the length of the record times the amount of records but the file is a fair bit larger. Ha...

Hi, Dinosaur I shall use your techniques like the variable and freefile, Thanks. So if the for next loop went to totalrecords that would be the equivalent as EOF ? (If so why would say in this instance totalrecords = lof(FileNum)/len(record) be referring to a record out side of the file?) Thanks Heaps

Well what i was doing was trying to randomly select an element or record out of approx 784632 that had some other type values in it, but the thing was i wanted to eliminate some elements or records so there is a smaller number range that the random choice could be. So you're saying I should copy wha...

Hi Everyone, Thanks for your replies. jevans4949 and Sisophon2001, I understand the concept you've explained, putting another feild in the record marking it for deletion is a fine idea, but I'm unsure how the compact function would resize the file and did you mean in "overwrite the entries marked as...

err, embarrassingly i'm not sure if it's 'fixed record format' or not, i just learnt it at school a couple years ago as: open "" FOR RANDOM... but i am curious as to what you ment, in: 'setting a string field to &hff which shouldn't normally be so', althought the &hff confuses me, is it like...

Resizing random access files

If you wanted to delete the last record, or possibly one in the middle, in a .dat file you created, how would you go about it?

I.e. Put #1, record_you_want_to_delete, type

[I wouldnt mind knowing how to do this with like 'Redim preserve' arrays if there is a way, either.]

Cheers!

No, worries.

So would there be an limitations (like extended ascii characters) in what can be stored and used in the files if each element in the array is a byte?

I tried to just change the data type in the macro from byte to integer but in running the program the result was unsuccessful.

I am receiving and error saying:

E:\FBIDETEMP.asm: Assembler messages:
E:\FBIDETEMP.asm:107: Error: non-constant expression in ".if"

To do with a macro IncArrayEx().

Any tips?

Thanks a lot
