I am slowly working on my first large project. I have been programming in basic for a number of years, and dabble in C. I program for fun, no other reeaons. I find *basic to be rather enjoyable to program in. Freebasic even more so with its increased power and ease of use.

This project is a Post appocolyptic strategy RPG i nthe spirit of the classic Wasteland/Fallout seris. I am using the d20 open gaming systems for combat/equipment and the like. I have a simple item editor, map editor, dialogue/quest editor done. I just now need to create the game itself (currently working on the main menu-> new game area so about 1% done LOL!)

I am going to use a similar combat mechanic as Fallout.. you walk around Pixel*Pixel and when you enter combat it becomes turn based.

The nanite event is the story of how the world came to be the way it is, in shambles, destroyed and slowly rotting away. The IMS (Icarus military systems) has perfected nanotechnology, and fused it with the very cells of a human host. This makes the host an emotionless killing machine. The use thier brainwaves to manipulate the Nanomachines inside thier bodies to create the appearance of "magic" in various respects. The project was supposed to stay hidden. Of course it doesnt.

The "Alpha's" as I call them begin to systematically wipe out the human race to secure thier spot on the food chain. Some humans steal the nano technology and inject the nanites into thier bloodstreams... most die in the process the ones that survive need constant reinjection to prevent the nanites from detroying them (I have a more detailed explanation of this in my laptop) we clal these Beta's or False Mages. Beta's are shunned by Alphas and humans alike.

The lifespan of Alphas is signiicantly shorter, to reporduce they kidnap hosts and through ther painful process of introducing the nanite birthing code known as "The Awakening" a new Alpha is born.

You are Darius Williams, a soldierm one of the last brave enough to take on the Alpha's and retake the planet for the Human race. You delve into the hostory of IMS, uncover corruption and deceiet at every angle. Make allies, enemies.. and maybe a love interest... or two ;D

As you can see I have the story pretty much worked out at this point :) I hope I can finsih this in its entirety. I am a writer by trade.

If anyone interested in helping with either coding, images, sounds, making maps, items and so on please let me know as KrashtheMighty@hotmail.com

EDIT: this is the generel IDEA but NOT how the story will play out... alot of what I wrote here has been changed

I have had some experience with it and haven't had very many complaints. Its nice to see another writer making a game around here as writing is my other hobby. ;) The advantage of course of using the d20 is that you have a rock solid system with which to start on and that should make it easy to balance gameplay later on. It is probably more complicated than many computer game rules systems, but then again rpg's tend to do that. I also like the theme, there aren't enough scifi games out there as there are fantasy ones, so it'll be refreshing. Good luck, and I like the story so far, sounds pretty thought out.

Its based on a book im trying to get published right now. My only issue is graphics... I am a horrid artist :) Im using ascii right now to get the game up and running... graphics are an afterthought at this point.

I will probibly use this thread to update my game... until I devote some time to makign a website. I am not online much (family man) and when I am I am usually at work :)

the only balancing issue I will have is if i decide to allow a player to become a Beta... they have HUGE bonuses but suffer greatly because thier body literally decays over time...

The nanite system uses constructors that create nanites on the fly to perform simplistic tasks. Once they are done the second type Deconstructors remove them from the host which over time causes considerable wear and tear in the host depending on the complexity of the "program"

I LOVE the story line though, sounds like a Jedi Outcast/Resident Evil/Blade fusion ;-)

Im a huge star wars fan and the other 2 are very much influences... though mostly the "fallout" seris

I wont be posting much next week im going away on vacation to Lake George!

I am not a huge fan of overusing magic... so the nanite system is VERY limited its not all tossing fireballs and whatnot! If you would like to help Ill drop an email today (at the latest tommorow) and we can work something out.. I just want my vision to become a finished product!

Star wars fan huh? lol yeah, I read most of the books...

Well, as long as your are spearheading it, I think it might become a finished project [Im enfp]

No worries, I'll be gone camping for the next two weeks anyways [real camping, not that wannabe stuff in the campsites with trailers or that stuff :-p]

Yeah I like the nanites idea, you could have like nanite capsule littered about that you could pick up that would increase your nanite bar, once it got to a certain level you can activate a short list of powers....each power could be like something that you pick up along the way, like after taking out an Alpha or something...you like 'download' from their nanite's memory the instructions of how to do something, and can 'program' your nanites to do just that, because alphas as so powerful, they would make good bosses anyways, and a prompt reward is always good ;-) Of course as the levels go on, they become stronger, as do the powers they could give you...I say make Alphas rare, but as strong as like 'Reborns' in Jedi Outcast, make one on one battle scenes would be good too. In this case, you might want to think of 'lower class' bad guys that dont require all that much effort to kill and are the primary guys to take out. Unless if this is totally far from your story...these are just ideas

Then you would have to wait a certain time while your character has slower speed and strength after a nanite activation, eventually you would recoverand can activate again if nessasary [mabey having that 'nanite withdrawal' to go on with an increasing about of time with each use]...also we might be able to do some weird stuff to the screen to make it look like you are 'tripped out' like un Jedi Outcast 2 after you've been attacked by an interroragtor driod

Again, just some thoughts...

Anyways, email and let me know,

The Vindre are the lower class badguys :) Humans arent the only ones in the galaxy. I should send you my notes... the nanite concept goes further than alpha's and Beta's

the notes will give you a basic idea of the world (my written notes at least!)

I would build the ground work code before opening a website...too many good looking games have sites and only that because they get all the glittering things up and then loose whatever motivation they had. Trust me, the fans can wait, build the groundwork on your engine, then when you have something to show make your website with all the info, story, screenshots, etc.

just my $.02
