Well, nice games there but I would like to see more ambition from you. I mean stuff like:
| Quote: | ' NO SOUND ( I'm not musician nor sound fx designer... may be you are !)
' NO INTRO ( I'm not artist... may be you are !) |
Search for sound effects on the net and there is public domain music tracks out there too.
For me personally, your games are worth being tried but no something that I will play over and over. Implement saveable high scores and try to do something with presentation. Try to update some of the games(not all can be on this way) so they would feature pixel-based movement.
At this point all that your games do to me are "Man, this wouldn't be bad to remake."
Too Much Cement shows a very good progress in graphics. |

Ah, I remember the last time I searched for audio tracks and sound effects online. It was a nightmare. Clips and cheesy recorded tracks abound, and not a single sound effect that wouldn't raise eyebrows.
Tinks, tonks, blips and bleps are a lot harder to find than you'd think. |

I collected a really huge amount of sound effects(around 500, some made by me) but they are 28 MB large and I can't upload that anywhere. Maybe I can think of something.
Still, I didn't have problems finiding what I want. |

Thanks for your very valuable feedback.
From an artist point of view you're aboslutly right !
but CSGP is born with constraints (may be stupid or utopic)
- use native FB lib only (no lib dependency)
- non-use of direct OS API (no Windows or Linux dependency)
- non-file resource dependency (all in .bas source)
- each title in one .bas source
- source file as small as possible
- 320x240x8 2pages : gfx (low end gfx-card)
Good FB games are most of the time not FB native (openGL, SDL, Allegro, FMOD, BASS, Newton etc...)
Good FB games use FB most of the time for the program main flow... not for the rest
CSGP is born to see how FB is natively powerfull to generate fun !
CSGP is cross-platform as FB
CSGP is open source as FB
CSGP is sound-less as FB (except beep ;) )
CSGP is music-less as FB (exist some very good FB code but not Cross-Platform)
-I'm not against good library, but I just want to see how far we can go with FB in a neutral usage
-I love all the efforts provided by the developer team to have FB natively more powerful.
-I love your games, they are all pro-quality game and I'm far from your quality level ...
----
Saved high score is something I planned to do :)
I would like to follow your advice on sound/music but CSGP constraint make it difficult to do right now
I will understand that you may consider CSGP rules as stupid or utopic for fun game...
In all cases if nobody will be interesting in CSGP anymore then CSGP will die ! Then I will use all the high tech lib as every body and will use music and sound fx ;P
Hope you still have fun with my utopic CSGP ! |

Well, you should use FMOD for sound. I think it's cross-platform and you can make a condition in the code which checks if FMOD is present and if the computer is unable to initiate it the sound and music would not be played. Many people forget this thus making their game inoperable on PCs without a sound card or with a malfunctioning sound card.
A nice FMOD example demo should appear in QB Express #20 as a part of my "How To Program A Game With Blah, Blah" article. Lesson #2.
I can live without sound and music in computer games, trust me. Shees, I didn't own a PC with a sound card for years. This was just a suggestion. You didn't point out in the source codes that you don't want for CSGP games to be library independent. I was just reacting on your words from the source codes.
As for presentation it's nothing huge. It takes little time and makes your game more enjoyable to play. Make a small title or main menu screen and remove that console window. Put instructions in a txt file or inside the game. And high scores are a must have for such type of game. The whole point is in beating the preset or your friend's score. |

| Call me crazy, but I feel that the CSGP is a hallmark of FB in its purest sense. Not that enhancing the games would be particularly objectionable. |

Absolutly ! Currently most of the title are " version 0.1.x" ... Enhancement is a must ! ;)
All valuable feedback (as Lachie Dazdarian posts) are very welcome ! |

Umm...well, these games are cool, well thought out and done
However, Im sorry, but they simpley do not stretch the limits of "native" FB...theres just so much you can do...not to mention you could write [or port] your own functions for manipulating the sound card if you wish, and still all be in native FB, also alpha blending with sprites, more challenging in depth games, faster game play, you know, just something that will captivate people, also take advantage of resourcing power...
All in all, I have to say its a great start, but, Im sure you would want my objective critism, it could be better even if you are limiting yourself to native FB
Happy coding,

Still, I didn't have problems finiding what I want. | Lachie if you need somewhere to store that I can upload it to my site, I have 250gb bandwidth and plenty of space. That is of course if I can use some of them =) but you should prolly organize them into smaller catagories so people on dial up can still get to them rather than downloading it all in one. |

Thanks for your feedback...
Sure you right... with FB you can do low level call or hardware handling and other, but when you do that , you create dependency with hardware and OS (when FB will be GCC front end, I do not want to have migration issue)
ASM is currently x386 only
use of INP/OUT is currently used only with "intel shipset (or compatible)"
INP OUT is most of the time disallowed if you do not have root privilege (under linux)
- I would like to imagine to compile CSGP for a pocket PC or Palm or Solaris or ... without any change. What nice dream ! (of course if fb libs will run on these platform ;) )
- Yes it's true, CSGP has a poor game style (LCD handheld style) :
rare pixel/pixel motion, 8bpp 256 colors, 320x240, some transparency no alpha blending... I started CSGP with a idea of nostalgy of vintage old handy games... If the community think CSGP goals are incompatible with this game style ... I will understand... Anyway CSGP has to evolve, (so have I) in technique and style... ( Heh ! I'm new in FB... I'm not a geek yet ;) )
- Most of titles are currently in 0.1 version ... First time release ! These tiles are my first public release in my life... okay okay .. no excuse ;).
Thanks again for your feedback, these kind of feedbacks push me to progress.
I keep doing my best to give you fun proggies, with utopic rules :D |
